How to enable extended logging

While troubleshooting installation or setup issues, at a point of time you may need to check registry entries that are listed in Setupapi.log file. But this file does not contain any registry information till the time verbose or extended logging is not enabled.

Verbose logging is a computer logging mode that records more information than the usual logging mode. For troubleshooting installation and setup issues, this logging is very essential. Since this logging option creates large log files, you system may start performing slow after enabling it.

Enabling extended logging

To enable verbose logging on a Windows XP-based computer, follow these steps:

 

  • Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open field, and then click OK

  • Locate and then double-click LogLevel under the following registry subkey

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

  • On the Edit DWORD Value window, click to select Hexadecimal on the Base pane

  • Type 0000FFFF in the Value data box.

  • Click OK.

After enabling verbose logging, you can easily troubleshoot issues related to installation or setup, as you may find every log related to the issue and find solution accordingly.
